Teach programming the way it's done by programmers
To teach programming, you could start with Java, C++, or Visual Basic, but your students may find their syntax hard to understand. You'll also be using highly complex software, like Visual Studio or Eclipse, that is great for big projects, but not for getting started. It gets pretty confusing, pretty quickly.
Or, you can minimize code syntax and teach with a "drag-and-drop" approach, using Alice and Scratch. They are great for animating characters and creating stories but not as great at showing how working programmers actually work with code. There are other options too, such as Ruby and Python - more powerful than Alice and Scratch and simpler than Java, but still relatively hard to learn for beginners.
